DISCOVERING LIFE BEYOND CLASSROOMS

Teachers enjoy a predominant position in Indian culture. The verse ’acharya devo bhava’ whichmeans that teachers are equivalent to god depicts their importance. Although, students get acquainted with several teachers, there will be one particular teacher or a few of them with whom the students feel attached and the students cherish those teachers in their memories for long.

Shaping one’s career and leading from darkness to knowledge, it is a teacher who provides the strong foundation and stands as a pillar in the life of a student. Teaching is a sacred profession. But looking at the other side of it, there are certain loopholes. Firstly, some people feel that academics is not successful in meeting the requirements of the industry. The argument strikes a chord and questions the very potentials of the teachers. The teachers are held answerable to this. Secondly, maintaining a rapport with the students on one side and controlling them without turning out to be a ’ring master’ on the other is a challenge for the teachers. The article looks into the current system of education and the qualities a teacher should possess.

The education system in India is a conventional one. Securing high mark is all that matters. Education is exam-oriented. The level of general knowledge among students is deteriorating. Education is treated as a burden by the students. Academic excellence is given utmost priority. Extra curricular activities, special interest of the students, morals and ethical values have taken a back seat. Due to the extreme stress and burden, students no longer enjoy their studies. The performance of the students will naturally go down if school is not made a fun place to learn.

Students committing suicide out of frustration and depression especially when results are declared is on the rise. This is a major issue to be tackled. Teachers and parents can lend a helping hand in reducing suicide rate among students. Awareness must be created in the minds of students that securing distinction in the exams is not everything. Every individual possesses a unique talent and that talent should be identified and nurtured by both, teachers and parents, who shape their careers. A teacher must help the students to see life beyond mark sheets. Further, a teacher must be interactive, encouraging and friendly to the students. To avoid being outdated, the teachers must be keep themselves up-to-date.

Teaching must not strictly be confined to academic curriculum. Opening students to the outside world and broadening their horizons of thinking mean real education. A teacher must be ideal and not idle. But sadly, today’s education system has turned out to be three hours of continuous writing at the examination hall for marks, knowledge today is measured through marks. Securing cent per cent is nothing if students are not taught about human values and basic ethics of life.

Classroom teaching should be made as lively as possible. Cracking jokes between lessons and giving instances related to it can make the class more interesting. Students approach teachers only when the teachers relate themselves with the students.

The gap between the industry and academic institutions must be abridged. Only when both the academics and industrial world come together on a single platform to assist the students, the usual and frequent complaints made by the industries in terms of students practical knowledge can be reduced enormously. Due to unchecked mushrooming of various institutions the degradation and compromise in terms of teaching is on rise.

If stringent action is not taken against this, it will speed up the corrosion of an already corroded society.

Handling sensitive souls and minds of the students is an art in which the teachers must excel. A teacher should instill values of courage, bravery, confidence and love among students. Teaching is not just about helping students to emerge as class toppers; it is about identifying and encouraging their inner talents. It is also about building confidence of students to face the challenges, it is about promoting good values and habits, it is about making students hold up their bubbling spirit and prevent them from succumbing to suicide, it is about shaping students as good human beings. Teaching can bring colours to students’ lives outside the four walls of a classroom.

Teachers must be remembered with sweet memories and not merely as a person with a cane. Teachers must make a resolution in their minds to light the lives of students and cultivate a positive approach towards life among them, for students are the future of our nation.
